The Work Behind Each Puppy

Bar JO litters are planned years in advance. First, we import dogs from reliable breeders in the USA. We train the puppy and ensure that the dog is gentle with children, fierce with predators, reliable with livestock, and enjoyable to work with. This is not something we take lightly. We evaluate dogs strategically and only breed dogs that meet our high standards. When the dog is 2 years old, we take them for OFA and PennHIP tests. If they do not pass with adequate marks we will not breed them.

After this, we will consider our dogs and select the 2 we want to breed. From there we wait and watch for the female to go into heat. When she does we observe that the dogs tie or we will artificially inseminate her. After 4 weeks we take her to the vet for an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. Depending on the female, we may also choose to take her for an x-ray at the 8-week mark in gestation.

When the female goes into labour, we carefully monitor her and will notify a vet immediately if we have any concerns. We monitor each puppy to ensure they are responsive, healthy, and nursing.

Week 0 & 1

The puppies are blind and unable to regulate their body temperature. We carefully monitor each puppy and regularly weigh them to ensure consistent weight gain and keep them warm and dry.

Week 2

Puppies begin to open their eyes and can regulate their body temperature. We continue to closely monitor each one. They are also gently handled by children.

Week 3

Puppies start to have short bursts of energy. We introduce them to soaked puppy food and the outdoors, weather permitting.

Week 4

Puppies hearing and sight improve dramatically. We introduce the puppies to livestock for several hours each day.

Week 5

The puppies gain energy and are more responsive. We allow them to spend the day out in the pasture alongside their mom and the livestock.

Week 6

Puppies are playful and curious. We transition them outside with the livestock 24/7 and begin limiting the time the puppies have access to their mom. We also take them to the vet where they are microchipped, dewormed, vaccinated, and vet checked. They are also transitioned onto solid puppy food. We begin placing puppies with their owners.

Week 7

Puppies continue to grow and investigate new things. We introduce them to new things and places.

Week 8 & 9

Puppies have suddenly gone from puppies to little dogs. They are weaned from their mom and ready for their homes.

What Makes Us Diffrent

Back in 2020, we had an important decision to make. At the time there were no active CKC Anatolian breeders in Canada, so we could purchase unregistered Anatolians locally and breed them, or we could put out the money and buy 2 registered dogs from an Anatolian Shepherd breeder in the United States. After contemplating we asked ourselves; why do we want to breed anatolians? We determined we wanted to breed dogs to preserve the Anatolian Shepherd dog in Canada by providing Canadians with registered, healthy, and reliable livestock guardian and family acreage dogs. After that, we set out to import puppies from a top breeder in the USA (Shepherds Rest). Over the first 2 years of ownership, we trained them and watched to see if they had temperaments we wanted passed down. At 2 years we took both of our dogs in for OFA and PennHIP tests, we knew that if they didn’t receive adequate marks we would not breed them. After their results came back we then had to go through the process of registering them both with AKC and then CKC. After lots of time, training, money, and effort we were ready to provide Canada with beautiful Anatolian Shepherd puppies. Read More.

OFA Certified

All of our breeding dogs met the OFA requirements on their hips, elbows, and thyroid when they were 2 years old. This ensures that we aren't passing down unhealthy genes to our future litters.

Am I the Right Fit for an Anatolian Shepherd?

Anatolian Shepherds are a large breed of dog that were bred to protect shepherds' flocks from predators, such as wolves and bears. They are known for their loyal, independent, confident, observant, and protective nature. They are a great fit for families who are looking for an acreage or livestock guardian. However, it's important to note that Anatolians require firm and consistent training methods and a large, properly fenced, area to guard. If you are considering getting an Anatolian, see if you have these five qualities and please don't hesitate to reach out to us with any concerns or questions.

  1. You have more than 2 acres of land.

  2. You primarily want a dog for guardian purposes (property or livestock) and not as a pet.

  3. You want a quieter guardian dog, that won't bark mindlessly, but only if there is a threat.

  4. You have proper fencing, that a dog couldn't jump over and crawl under or through.

  5. You can train and handle a large breed of dog (our Anatolians all have matured between 115-185lbs).
